Academy Notes: Deji Elerewe

Charlton Athletic U23s defender Deji Elerewe spoke to Valley Gold for Academy Notes after the 4-0 win at Crewe Alexandra.

The centre-back who describes himself as a ball playing athletic defender has featured entirely with the U23 and 1st teams this season despite being a U18 Scholar, and speaking after the win at the Mornflake Stadium, he told Valley Gold:

“We were in control of the ball in the first half with a lot of good interplay against a good opponent. As a reward for all our excellent play, we managed to get a goal courtesy of a header from Ryan Viggars from a perfectly centred corner by Jeremy Santos. This goal gave us the lead going into the second half.

“After the break, our team showed the quality that we possess especially in the last thirty minutes of the game. Charlie Barker got on the scoresheet from the centre of defence, smartly timing his run from deep to convert from close range in a well-worked team goal that was created by a nice bit of play from Karoy Anderson and a great cross supplied by Harris O’Connor. It’s also important to not exclude the role Euan Williams played in creating this goal; with an excellent dummy giving Charlie the simple task of applying the finishing touch.

“Soon after Ryan Viggars rounded the advancing goalkeeper with Euan once again playing a pivotal role.

“To conclude a dominant second-half display, the icing on the cake came from an exquisite pass by Toby Bower from more good build-up play from the team for Jason Adigun to finish emphatically to make it 4-0 to the travelling Addicks.

“This performance puts us in a good position to finish the campaign strongly and build towards a more successful 2022/23 season.”
