Charlton Athletic U18s defender Toby Bower spoke to Valley Gold for Academy Notes after the recent 6-0 win at home to Watford.
The full-back who signed for the Addicks at U9s level and likes to receive the ball and press forward creating goal-scoring chances told Valley Gold:
“Both teams started the game quite well and some half chances were created but there was no real threat on either goal, although Watford’s attacking threat caused us some problems on the counter and some chances were created due to our mistakes.
“It took around 20 minutes for us to take the lead when a short corner was delivered to the edge of the box, and Matt Dench was ready to smash a half volley into the side netting. Our second came just before half time when Miles Leaburn intercepted a loose pass from the opposition and was composed enough to go around the keeper and pass into the empty net.
“In quick succession, we scored again with a penalty from myself which I slotted home into the top corner, and immediately from the restart, we pressed aggressively to win it back high up the pitch and Tolu Ladapo beat the defender and crossed for Chibike Okechukwu who finished from close range.
“After the break, we came out dominating and Watford’s keeper was keeping the scoreline from being embarrassing. But with 20 minutes to go, we added a fifth when Sahid Kamara slotted into the bottom corner.
“Watford eventually had a chance to get one back when a harsh penalty decision was given against Nathan Asiimwe. Their number 14 stepped up and dragged his shot wide of the post before our sixth goal came when Miles Leaburn scored his second of the game with tidy footwork and a neat finish.
“A seventh could’ve been scored when the third penalty of the game was given, however, Tolu Ladapo smashed it over the bar.”
