Charlton Athletic U18s goalkeeper Henry Molyneux spoke to Valley Gold for Academy Notes after the recent 2-1 win over Cardiff City.
The young shot-stopper who is in his first year at the Academy believes he has the qualities of an old-fashioned old-school goalkeeper but also the qualities of a modern goalkeeper knowing how to start attacks and play through the lines. He told Valley Gold:
“We started the game sharply, however, there wasn’t much reward from the territory we were gaining in the first 10 to 15 minutes, however, in a passage of play where there were turnovers from both teams just like a basketball game and all of a sudden our left-sided flying full-back Toby Bower managed to come out with the ball and ended up sliding it through to the stumbling Ryan Huke who managed to lift it into the back of the net to give us the lead.
“From then on both teams had chances, however, we had the better of the chances, but we had nothing to show for our good work and maybe needed a little bit more composure in the final third, as well as more care with our passing.
“We came out for the second half the fastest with improved passing and conviction in our play showing why we are top of the league. There was at least another goal in this game, and it came from our man-mountain number 9, Miles Leaburn who was on the end of one of those gifted Matt Dench balls into the box and all of a sudden the net rippled with disarray for Cardiff and 2-0 to the Addicks.
“There wasn’t much happening in the next quarter of an hour, however, there were slight lapses of no concentration from both teams, and unfortunately one was by myself taking a big touch into pressure whereas I should have put the ball out and into the new portacabins at the Training Ground! The opposition player ran towards me with the ball but came out the worse of us two in my 50/50 challenge.
“After a lengthy break in play, a route one style ball from a free-kick found their racing striker to slot it past me in his stride to pull a goal back for the visitors.
“The game ended 2-1 and I think we had a good performance and showed good character against a horrible Cardiff side.”
