Charlton Athletic U23s midfielder Jimmy Appiah spoke to Valley Gold for Academy Notes after the recent 2-1 win at Bristol City.
The Ghanaian-born midfielder who joined the Academy at U13/14 level is now 19 years old and even after 6 seasons, is still proud to be part of the Charlton family. Speaking about the game at the Robins High Performance Centre, he told Valley Gold:
“The game was a joy to watch, especially the first half as we placed some really good football and we went into the break with a 1-0 lead courtesy of Daniel Kanu who pounced to tap home after a thunderous strike from Charlie Barker which rattled the underside of the crossbar.
“We made a really poor start to the second half with Bristol City nullifying our build-up play from the back which sometimes forced us to play long direct balls which isn’t in our DNA. We’re a club known for dominating the ball and our coaches have encouraged and given us the belief to accept the ball and have more of it than any opponent.
“It was a rocky start but we managed to get back into our old ways by passing the ball well again which gave us another goal as Wassim Aouachria put us 2-0 ahead following some good team play and a neat cross by Euan Williams.
“Not long after City scored to make it 2-1 to set up a nervy finish, but we dug deep and fought well to take all 3 points.
“Bristol applied lots of pressure towards the end and kept testing us with long balls which shows that we still need to practice how to deal with direct play. Overall it was a really good game to watch and a deserved victory.”
