Charlton Athletic U18s defender Toby Bower spoke to Valley Gold for Academy Notes after the 4-0 Premier League Cup win at home to QPR.
The full-back who first started training with the club as a 7-year-old signing for the Charlton Athletic Academy at U9 level describes himself as a technical player who likes to receive the ball and play forward to try and create goals, and he told Valley Gold:
“We started the game against QPR very slowly and couldn’t keep the ball long enough to try and enforce our style of play. Their aggressiveness caused us some problems when trying to play out and we couldn’t recreate the patterns of play that we have been doing very well.
“We had a couple of half-chances before we eventually scored when Daniel Kanu latched onto a loose back pass from their defender, went round the keeper and found the back of an empty net.
“The second goal came shortly after when Ahmed Kone sent a promising ball over the top of their defence where Tolu Ladapo pounced onto a loose touch from their defender and sent him through on goal where he finished clinically.
“We came out in the second half aggressively and started to play exciting football. We regained the ball well and after a few tidy passes, Ryan Huke played a delightful through ball to Daniel Kanu who slotted away his second goal of the game.
“The fourth goal came right at the end of the game when Henry Rylah beat a man with some skill and fired a shot across the goal saved by the keeper and followed in by Tolu Ladapo who was composed to score his second goal of the game.”
The 4-0 win gives the Addicks a perfect start in their Premier League Cup campaign.
