Charlton Athletic U23s midfielder Euan Williams spoke to Valley Gold for Academy Notes after the 2-0 win at home to Sheffield Wednesday.
The 18-year-old who first started training with the club as a 7-year-old signing for the Charlton Athletic Academy at U9 level describes himself as an energetic number 10 who likes to run in behind, receive the ball in pockets of space, create & score goals, and he told Valley Gold:
“We didn’t start the game very well and it took us about 30 minutes to start playing. Their direct style of play made it difficult for us to adopt our game plan of pressing them and we had to fight to win first and second balls to regain the ball for most of the first half. They had a few chances that required last-ditch blocks from Naz Bakrin and James Beadle to keep the scores level. The only real chance of the half for us was when I played Hady Ghandour through on goal. The keeper made a good save but Hady was adjudged to have been offside.
“We dominated the second half from start to finish and this won us the game. We had a couple of chances to score before we eventually did; the main one was when Charles Clayden worked the ball well into the box and played it to me, I then crossed the ball and Darnell Baxter-Allyene (Trialist) missed what seemed a certain goal from one yard out.
“Eventually, the goals game, Charles again managed to beat his man on the right wing crossing the ball into the box and an attempted clearance fell to Jacob Roddy who finished clinically. Ben Dempsey then made a great run down the right wing again and crossed a wonderful ball into the box for Hady to tap in from close range. We continued to dominate as the game wore on but couldn’t manage to find more goals.”
The win sees Charlton’s U23s move up to fourth position in the league table.
