Charlton Athletic U23s defender Billy French spoke to Valley Gold for Academy Notes after the recent 4-0 win over Cardiff City.
Kicking off the new year with an emphatic victory at Sparrows Lane, Billy told Valley Gold:
“It was an even first half with neither team being able to convert chances. We were unlucky not to score after some great set-piece deliveries from Harry Taylor, with myself narrowly missing after getting on the end of a cross. The first half saw a good defensive display from us with some great blocks, tackles and headed clearances to deny Cardiff any chances. I felt we topped the first 45 minutes being more dominant despite the half ending goalless.
“We carried our momentum into the second half applying pressure on Cardiff’s defence, and Quintirna Junior displayed some individual brilliance with a nice long driven strike from outside the box as well as converting a great freekick. Hady Ghandour also converted two goals with one being a great team play on the right-hand side with a combination between Freddy Barton and Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu to set up Hady for an easy tap in.
“Nathan Harvey also pulled off an amazing save tipping the ball onto the crossbar, in order to keep the clean sheet and a rebounded effort was offside. Overall it was a solid performance and a great way to start the year. The boys will be looking to keep this winning momentum going ahead of our next fixture against QPR.”
