Charlton Athletic U23s midfielder Johl Powell spoke to Valley Gold for Academy Notes after Monday’s 1-0 defeat away to Hull City.
The smart, play-making midfielder told Valley Gold:
“We had a great start to the game we moved the ball well for most parts of the half and out of possession we worked well as a team. We were creating a fair few chances but wasn’t working the keeper enough. I feel that we didn’t play through the midfield enough as we could’ve until the later parts of the first half.
“In the second half we started brightly creating more chances but it was down to us and our end product or final pass for why it wasn’t falling for us. I felt we had control of the game and were playing through the midfield much more than we were in the first half. Hull went down to 10 men after a foul on me and that allowed us to have even more opportunities for the rest of the game. As a team, we were pressing much more and started to get a lot of joy higher up the pitch from this.
“Unfortunately in the 85th minute, Hull broke on the counter and punished us and that was the only goal of the game. The team deserved much more from the performance we had put in throughout the game against a strong Hull side. Overall it was disappointing to come away with nothing but, we will have to get ourselves ready for the game next week vs Barnsley and make sure we get the 3 points.”
