Charlton’s U23s maintained their unbeaten start to the season but were left frustrated by a goalless draw at Colchester United on Monday evening.
The young Addicks dominated the game, but missed a number of opportunities and hit the woodwork three times as they failed to make a breakthrough at the JobServe Community Stadium.
Jay Mingi was first to strike the crossbar when his looping cross nearly sneaked in, before James Vennings showed good tenacity to close down a clearance from the hosts’ goalkeeper, only for the ball to bounce back off the post.
Vennings once again was denied by the woodwork early in the second half when his excellent free-kick curled over the wall but pinged off the crossbar.
Charlton continued to create openings with shot after shot either missing the target or being repelled by the ‘keeper. Late on, Ben Dempsey could have broken the deadlock when Hady Ghandour’s effort was parried straight to him in the box, but he mis-hit his volley which spun wide.
Jason Euell’s side will return to action when they host Watford at Dartford’s Princes Park on Monday.
