Academy graduate Zach Mitchell has been named the Sky Bet League One Apprentice of the Season.
The award, which recognises outstanding young professionals at EFL clubs who excel both on and off the pitch, was presented to Mitchell at Sunday evening’s 2023 EFL Awards ceremony in London following his remarkable breakthrough campaign.
Speaking on-stage, Mitchell said: “When you think about past winners and what they have achieved you can only aspire to follow that type of trajectory. It is an accolade that is a step in the right direction and I think more than anything I am extremely grateful for everyone who has helped me on my journey.”
The 18-year-old signed his first professional contract with the club last summer and has made eight appearances for the men’s first team thus far this season.
Mitchell’s success means the Addicks have now claimed back-to-back Apprentice of the Season awards after Deji Elerewe’s triumph last year.
As well as Elerewe, the centre-back follows in the footsteps of fellow academy graduates Jordan Cousins, who was crowned League One winner in 2012, and Ademola Lookman, who took home the Championship award in 2016.
Mitchell was up against Barnsley’s Fábio Jaló and Gatlin O’Donkor of Oxford United for this year’s accolade.
Congratulations, Zach!
