Charlton Women 2 Bristol City Women 5

Charlie Devlin scored two excellent goals as the Addicks put in a positive display against the top tier side.

Charlton created two good chances in the opening five minutes. Charlie Devlin and Charlie Estcourt were involved in both, but their through balls to one another were read well by Bristol City shot-stopper Eartha Cumings.

Bristol then put a lot of pressure on Charlton, who did well to hold their own from the constant attacks. The visitors took the lead in the 16th minute through Ebony Salmon, after Charlton lost possession from a throw-in.

There was almost a second three minutes later when Yana Daniels received the ball at the edge of the box and went for goal, but it was inches over the bar.

Devlin created another good chance for the Addicks on 25 minutes, but her cross just eluded the head of Charley Clifford.

Bristol had two excellent chances soon after, Vita Van Der Linden had a clear header at goal, but Shanell Salgado was equal to it. The Addicks then cleared the ball off the line after another set-piece delivery.

Charlton got the equaliser through Charlie Devlin in the 36th minute. Jenna Legg won the Addicks a free-kick in the Bristol half, the free-kick was taken quickly and Devlin ran forward with the ball and curled a lovely effort into the top corner.

The Addicks held their own at the start of the second half, frustrating the visitors. City got their second with half an hour to go. Charlie Wellings had a shot from inside the box which bounced awkwardly for Salgado and ended up in the Charlton net.

Nine minutes later City got their third. A well-worked goal saw the ball get played out wide to Katie Robinson who cut in and drilled her effort into the bottom corner.

Charlton tried to push forward when they could, on 75 minutes Devlin took aim from the edge of the box, but Cumings was equal to it.

A minute later the Addicks were so close to getting a second, Devlin worked the ball out wide to Sara Eggesvik, who cut in and looked to bend the ball in the bottom corner, but it was brilliantly parried away by Cumings.

The visitors then got two goals in quick succession, Van Der Linden slotted the ball in the 81st minute after Frankie Brown’s effort crashed off the crossbar, and Georgia Wilson made it five on 83 minutes.

Charlton got a consolation goal in the 90th minute. A really well-worked goal saw Eggesvik pick out Devlin at the edge of the box, Devlin struck the ball into the far corner to give the Addicks a second.

The Addicks play their last game of 2019 on Sunday, 15th December away at Lewes. Charlton will be looking to take the positives and momentum from Wednesday’s game into the fixture.
